Overview
Dr. Zeki Acun is an Assistant Member in the Department of Gastrointestinal Oncology at Moffitt Cancer Center. He attended medical school at the University of Ankara Medical School in Ankara, Turkey, and subsequently started his General Surgery residency at the University of Ankara Medical School Hospitals, where he fulfilled all required clinical and surgical training, completed his thesis, and completed 5 years of General Surgery training.
Following residency, he was appointed as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Surgery and was later promoted to Associate Professor of Surgery. He then came to the United States and completed research fellowships in Transplant Surgery at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and Harvard University, performing microsurgeries. He subsequently completed an ASTS-accredited fellowship in Transplantation Surgery at the University of Miami from 2009 to 2011. After his Transplantation Surgery fellowship, he accepted a faculty position at SUNY Upstate Medical University, where he performed multiple kidney transplants, pancreas transplants, living-related transplant nephrectomies, as well as General Surgery procedures on transplant patients.
He joined the General Surgery residency program at SUNY Downstate in August 2019 and completed the program in July 2021. After residency, he worked as a General Surgeon and acute care surgeon and performed robotic surgeries in Ohio. He is certified by the American Board of Surgery and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
He has extensive experience in General Surgery, Transplant Surgery, and Acute Care Surgery, as well as teaching medical students, residents, and fellows. He has an established record of scholarly productivity with publications. His clinical interest is the general surgery care of cancer patients using minimally invasive and robotic techniques, as well as palliative surgery for terminal cancer patients to improve their quality of life.
