Kevin Olsen, MD, an anesthesiologist at Moffitt Cancer Center is not only serving cancer patients, but also his country.

In addition to his role at the cancer center, Olsen serves as the EMS medical director for Westover Air Reserve Base and as a critical care air transport physician for the U.S. Air Force.

Juggling his many roles would not be possible without the support of his colleagues and supervisors at Moffitt. To recognize that support, Olsen nominated fellow anesthesiologist Attila Becsey, MD, for a Patriot Award.

The Patriot Award is the first in a series of awards presented by Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve, or ESGR, and is awarded by the Department of Defense. An employee serving in the National Guard or Reserve, or the spouse of a Guard or Reserve member, may nominate individual supervisors and bosses for support provided directly to the nominating service member and his or her family. The Patriot Award reflects the efforts made to support citizen warriors through a wide range of measures including flexible schedules, time off prior to and after deployment, caring for families and granting leaves of absence if needed.

“I nominated Dr. Becsey for his supportive and flexible approach to my reserve service," Olsen said.
