Because the program is not ACGME-accredited, time spent in this fellowship does not count toward eligibility for the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery or the American Board of Surgery Complex General Surgical Oncology examinations. Candidates who hold or are pursuing that certification through their prior training are welcome and typical.
Colorectal Surgical Oncology Fellowship Eligibility and Application
Colorectal Surgical Oncology Fellowship applicants must have:
- An MD or DO degree from a U.S. or Canadian medical school, or an international medical degree with a valid ECFMG certificate
- Completed an ACGME-accredited general surgery residency, or a residency in their home country recognized as equivalent
- Completed, or be completing in the year before the fellowship, an ACGME-accredited Colon and Rectal Surgery residency or Complex General Surgical Oncology fellowship, or the recognized international equivalent. Applicants without subspecialty training in colorectal surgery or surgical oncology are generally not competitive.
- Eligibility for a Florida medical license or for registration as a fellow with the Florida Board of Medicine under section 458.345, Florida Statutes
- Passed USMLE Steps 1, 2 and 3 (or COMLEX equivalents)
U.S. citizens and permanent residents are eligible to apply. International applicants are considered; visa sponsorship is reviewed case by case with Moffitt Graduate Medical Education and should be discussed with the program before applying. Appointment is contingent on credentialing through the Moffitt Medical Staff Office and a pre-employment health screening.
How to apply
The program does not participate in a match. Applications are submitted directly to the program and reviewed by the Program Director and a faculty selection committee. Complete applications are due October 31 for a position beginning August 1 of the following year.

- Current curriculum vitae, including training history and peer-reviewed publications
- One-page personal statement describing your background, goals and desired focus during the year
- Three letters of recommendation, one from your department chair or program director
- USMLE or COMLEX transcript
- Copy of medical school diploma, with certified translation if not in English
- ECFMG certificate (international medical graduates)
2. Submit by October 31

3. Interview
- Selected candidates are invited to interview in October and November. Interviews will be conducted in December via Zoom.
4. Selection and Onboarding
Decisions are made by December 31. The selected fellow then completes Florida licensure or registration, Moffitt credentialing and onboarding in coordination with Graduate Medical Education before the August 1 start.
