Proton therapy expands the range of precision radiation treatment options available at Moffitt Cancer Center, helping physicians deliver highly personalized cancer care tailored to each patient’s diagnosis and treatment goals. By integrating advanced proton therapy technology into our multidisciplinary care, Moffitt provides referring providers with an additional radiotherapy solution.

Using the advanced capabilities of the Proteus® ONE system, proton therapy treatment is delivered with exceptional precision to target tumors while sparing nearby healthy tissue. This approach supports more personalized, precise treatment, the potential for fewer side effects and shorter treatment times.

Which Patients May Benefit From Proton Therapy?

Moffitt’s proton therapy technology is designed to deliver highly consistent and accurate treatment while prioritizing patient safety and comfort. By leveraging the precision of pencil beam scanning and the Bragg Peak effect, proton therapy can reduce unnecessary radiation exposure beyond the tumor.

In addition, the Proteus® ONE system combines a gantry that rotates +/- 120° with a 6D robotic couch affording horizontal patient rotations of over 180°, which together allow for 360° of treatment access, thereby providing unparalleled flexibility in dose sculpting and treatment delivery.

Moffitt’s proton platform is designed to support emerging technologies, including DynamicARC and ConformalFLASH, positioning the center to integrate future advances in radiation oncology as they become available. These innovations further improve treatment accuracy and efficiency while reducing unnecessary exit dose.

Our patients deserve the best technology, and not all proton therapy systems offer the same level of precision and effectiveness as the next-generation Proteus®ONE model.

The addition of proton therapy strengthens Moffitt’s comprehensive radiation oncology services and allows physicians to individualize radiotherapy approaches based on each patient’s unique diagnosis.

Refer a Patient for a Consult

Referring providers can expect close collaboration throughout the patient journey. Patients must first complete a consultation within the Radiation Oncology Program to determine candidacy for proton therapy. While proton therapy offers advantages in some cases, it is not universally the best option for all cancers.

Moffitt accepts several major insurance plans as well as Medicare and Medicaid. Coverage for proton therapy varies by insurance plan and diagnosis. Patients can check with their insurance company about proton therapy coverage, or they can contact our Financial Clearance Unit at 813-745-7300 or FCUinsuranceNavigator@Moffitt.org.

To refer a patient for a proton therapy consultation with the Radiation Oncology Program, complete our online form or contact a physician liaison for assistance. We know the importance of timely cancer treatment, which is why we strive to respond to all referral requests in less than 48 hours.
