Translational Pathology Department
The Translational Pathology Department at Moffitt Cancer Center is dedicated to accelerating the integration of scientific discoveries into clinical practice. By bridging cutting-edge research with clinical care, the department plays a vital role in improving patient outcomes and advancing personalized cancer treatment.
Translational pathology uses patient specimens—such as tissue, blood, and other fluids—to identify biomarkers that predict how individuals respond to therapies. These insights support the development of more precise and effective treatments across all cancer types and stages, not just the most common ones.
Under the leadership of Dr. Ignacio Wistuba, a nationally recognized expert in surgical and molecular pathology, the department works collaboratively with clinicians and researchers to enhance real-time cancer research and expand access to innovative clinical trials. With extensive experience in building translational programs, Dr. Wistuba brings a strategic vision for leveraging Moffitt's unique patient volume and diversity to drive impactful discoveries.
The Translational Pathology Department's goal is to streamline the process of applying research findings to patient care, creating a more efficient, science-driven path from laboratory to bedside. This approach supports Moffitt’s mission to offer personalized, research-informed care and to remain at the forefront of cancer innovation.
