The goal of the Moffitt Cancer Center's Pancreatic Cyst Clinic is to deliver the best care to patients with pancreatic cysts. Many pancreatic cysts are noncancerous, but some need closer monitoring or treatment. Our team reviews your imaging and medical history to recommend a plan tailored to your needs.

The clinic is part of Moffitt's Pancreas Interception Center, which focuses on pancreatic cancer risk assessment, early detection and research.

Our experts treat pancreatic cysts and can help you understand the best path forward.

Who May Benefit from an Evaluation in the Pancreatic Cyst Clinic?

Individuals with one or more pancreatic cysts identified on an imaging study (CT scan of the abdomen or an MRI). Having one or more cysts does not mean a person will develop pancreatic cancer. Eligibility for surveillance or intervention is determined through an individualized clinical assessment.

What to Expect at the Pancreatic Cyst Clinic

calendar icon Before Your Appointment

The clinic may request records related to your personal medical and cancer history, information about cancers in your family, previous genetic testing results, prior abdominal or pancreatic imaging, records related to pancreatitis or diabetes and a current medication list.

checklist icon Your Initial Evaluation

A specialist will review your personal and family medical history, genetic information, previous imaging and other risk factors. The team will discuss your estimated level of risk, whether surveillance is recommended, whether genetic counseling or testing may be helpful and which screening tests are appropriate.

stethoscope Multispecialty Review

When findings require additional evaluation, a patient’s case may be reviewed by experts in gastroenterology, pancreatic surgery, radiology, genetics, pathology, oncology and other disciplines. This collaboration helps determine whether continued surveillance, further testing or treatment should be considered.

Pancreatic surveillance may include MRI with magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) and endoscopic ultrasound. The recommended tests and follow-up schedule depend on the patient’s risk factors, genetic history and previous findings. Some patients may be monitored annually, while others may require more frequent follow-up or additional diagnostic testing.

Patients who qualify for continued surveillance receive a personalized plan outlining the recommended type and timing of follow-up testing. If a concerning change is identified, the team coordinates additional evaluation and connects the patient with the appropriate Moffitt experts.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How is a pancreatic cyst diagnosed?

Pancreatic cysts are often discovered during a CT scan or MRI performed for another reason. If a cyst is found, your care team will review the images and your medical history. Additional imaging or an endoscopic ultrasound may be recommended to learn more about the cyst and guide your care.

  • When should a pancreatic cyst be removed?

Finding a pancreatic cyst does not necessarily mean you need surgery. Some cysts can be monitored, while others may need to be removed because they cause symptoms or have features that raise concern for cancer. Your care team will explain what they see and recommend the next step based on your individual circumstances.

  • How can the Pancreatic Cyst Clinic help me manage my diagnosis?

The Pancreatic Cyst Clinic provides a place to have your cyst evaluated and get a clear plan for what comes next. Your care team will review your imaging and health history, discuss what is known about your cyst and recommend surveillance, additional testing or treatment when appropriate.

  • If I don’t need surgery, how will my cyst be monitored?

If monitoring is the best approach, you’ll return for follow-up visits and imaging, usually a CT scan or MRI. These visits typically take place every six months to a year, though your schedule will depend on your cyst and your care plan. Your team will look for changes over time and discuss whether any changes to your plan are needed.
