Digital Mammography with Computer-Aided Detection (CAD) in Tampa, FL
Digital mammography is available in the Don & Erika Wallace Comprehensive Breast Program at Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, Florida. For early-stage breast cancer screening, mammography remains the gold standard. Some breast centers continue to use analog technology, a less advanced option in which images of a breast are captured on film. While both technologies can detect breast cancer, digital mammography with computer-aided detection (CAD) allows a radiologist to view and manipulate the images on a computer screen for enhanced viewing. For instance, certain areas can be enlarged, lightened or darkened to provide a clearer picture and make possible abnormalities more apparent.
Due to the heightened level of detail that can be achieved through digital mammography with CAD, this screening method can be helpful for detecting diagnosing breast cancer in all patients. Additionally, the multispecialty team of breast cancer specialists at Moffitt in Tampa, FL, especially recommends this screening method for women who:
- Are 40 years old and older
- Are premenopausal or peri-menopausal
- Have very dense breast tissue
Digital mammography saves many lives. As a general guideline, Moffitt recommends an annual screening mammography beginning at age 40 for a woman of average risk for developing breast cancer. A woman who has a family history of breast cancer, a personal history of breast cancer or other high-risk breast lesions, certain genetic mutations or a history of chest radiation is considered to have a higher-than-average risk. Therefore, she may require other breast cancer screening tests in addition to annual digital mammography, such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the breasts. Furthermore, a high-risk woman may be advised to begin screening tests as early as age 25.
Consistent with American Cancer Society (ACS) recommendations, Moffitt supports a woman’s right to choose when to begin screening mammography and at what interval she would like to undergo screenings, provided that she is well informed by her physician about the benefits and drawbacks. Women are encouraged to consult with our breast cancer experts for individualized guidance. We do not require referrals.
